The Third Annual OctobAIREfest began with a beautiful, leisurely trip for us - from Nevada to San Luis Obispo, California. The weekend was set to be perfect. The Central Coast autumn weather was fabulous (as expected). It rained a little when we first arrived on Wednesday morning, but cleared by Thursday and the rest of our stay - was gorgeous.

We spent most of Wednesday getting set up at the El Chorro Campground. Our spot was perfect - backed up to San Luis Creek with a wooden bridge crossing over to the off lead dog park - and shaded by large Eucalyptus and Sycamore trees. Wildlife abounded - we saw owls, racoons, hawks, and even noted that there had been a Mountain Lion sighting in the park the day of our arrival.

Thursday evening, Dean, his daughter, Jesika, and I went into San Luis Obispo for the weekly Farmer's Market. They were both wowed - they don't see that kind of thing in Henderson. We spent time at the booths inspecting fruits, veggies, and just wandering in and out of shops up and down Higuera Street. The Farmer's Market is a really big deal there - and they close down a mile stretch of Higuera each Thursday evening for several hours for this specific purpose.

Festivities began on Friday afternoon when folks started arriving at about 4 PM for the grooming workshops. By the mounds of hair that were left when we were all done - I would say that the workshops were pretty successful. I'm not sure exactly how many dogs I helped to groom - but there were some stellar looking 'dales that exited the grooming area, let me tell you.

More owners arrived a little later in the evening and were welcomed by the people and dogs already at our set up. Around a cozy campfire, with good wine, and lots of snacks - we all sat/stood around and yaked about our passion - TFAOTP! *

Saturday dawned clear and bright and a group of about 20 owners and dogs headed down to the beach in the early morning. Got some nice candid shots and group shots - and that many Airedales in one place ALWAYS creates a stir - the beach is no different. The spectacle of that many dogs was totally awesome! The dogs had a great time meeting each other and romping up and down the waterfront. Once again, there were a couple of brave ones that jumped in and out of the water after tennis balls - with Mary Jane Grey's Sweet William in the lead. Rick Parker went through the trouble of leaving the park after the beach party and BBQ to go to a 1-hour photo to have some of the pics he took developed. He had a blow-up done of a group shot - it's really super (thanks again, Rick!), and I'm having it framed and it will have a place of honor in our new land yacht, "Moby".

The BBQ was a success with Bob Wagoner and Dean doing the cooking. Lots of folks brought extra dishes, and the menu was varied and tasty. Karen Morgan was responsible for the libations and she did a great job with her choice of wines, beers, and sodas. Everyone lent a helping hand. Afterwards, there was barely enough of anything left to give the dogs treats this year. :-( But - there were lots of takers for the scraps that were left...

The dogs had a great time this year, as usual. There were a couple of "brand-X" attendees - Apollo the Poodle, Minnie and Ripley, the Welshies, and a very, very, very, VERY tiny Yorkie - Milo. Any dog there could have put Milo in his/her mouth and none of us would have noticed (except his owners, of course, when they went to leave and wouldn't be able to find him! LOL!). I had the pleasure of seeing quite a few of my pups from past litters - from my oldest girl there - Talon (who was 9 in May), down to the pups from my boy MaXX's last litter who attended - Bodie (who traveled the longest distance to attend from British Columbia, Canada), Mudita who traveled from Arizona, Willow (who I kept confusing with her sister, Summer), who was here from Santa Rosa, and Summer who drove down from Atascadero (just over the hill from San Luis Obispo). Summer's co-owner, Tony Searson, tells me he has renamed Summer "Sumi", because that's what I will have to do to get her away from him - :-) - and all the dogs in between. It's always so nice to see them run together in one giant pack like they did this weekend. Rosey Young's Ruffian had his chest puffed out a little, but once he got put in his place, he was a good boy, and we all continued to have a great time. The "bad boys" for the weekend laughably were the dogs I was traveling with - Paddy being in time out for nearly the whole weekend for wanting to eat his 1/2 brother, Otis. Boys will be boys afterall...

Otis has his grandfather Mojo's wonderfully settled temperament, and for the most part, just ignored Paddy's overtures. Those of you who attended last year will remember Otis was the youngest member of the OAF pack at not quite 5 months of age. The youngest pups this year were all full brothers and sisters of Otis, a breeding repeated because of Otis' wonderful conformation and temperament.

I just wish that I could have been cloned to spend more time with each and every one of you. Mary Ellen - I saw you and your beautiful Adair - and barely had time for a wave!

When the raffle tickets were drawn, we took the youngest human and the eldest fur - Troy Beattie (who is owned by Gracie), and Karen and Bob's Dinah, who is now 13 - and these guys picked out the tickets for us.

The raffle and silent auction were busy. The Perpetual Donation Pastel Print donated by Kirke LaShelle (won last year and redonated by Deanna Vick of Idaho) was won by Michelle Fayer, of San Diego, California. The Canine First Aid Kit, donated by Dean Peeples, was won by Rosey Young of Poulsbo, Washington. Rosey also took home the Perpetual Donation Rescue Sculpture, donated last year by Shirley Sanborn (won last year and redonated by Karen Morgan of Los Osos, California). Marie Sistle, of Las Vegas, Nevada, won the Money Pot, and generously donated the amount she won back to rescue. When I receive all the checks from folks who are still paying up - it looks like we will be sending a check to National Airedale Rescue for around $1815!

In addition to the monies collected at OctobAIREfest III for rescue, I received a check from Pam McGarry for $100, donated in the loving memory of Sam Saunders, husband of Cindy Ulrich Saunders. Sam was an Airedale owner and lover, and Pam felt this was a very appropriate contribution/memorial to honor Sam's memory.

After the BBQ, more owners wandered once again over to our set up in the campgrounds, but not too much grooming got done on Saturday evening. More just laughing and good times. However, bright and early Sunday morning (and WAY too early for me :-) thanks to Jodyne and Tut and the wonderful bottle of wine they brought over...) there were knocks on my door for the grooming workshop to begin again. Once again, the sun was bright (WAY too bright for me...:-), so we put all those dogs up on the tables and got started.

Rosey, Ruffian & Jesika
Jesika & Paddy (still "roughed out")

Everyone started pulling up stakes around noon, with lots of hugs, pats and scratches, nicely groomed beasties, and promises to do this again next year.

When everything quieted down, Dean, Jesika, me and our dogs, Paddy, Otis, and Special, drove down the coast to Buellton and had lunch at Pea Soup Anderson's - and then drove into Solvang and had a leisurely day looking into shops and enjoying a beautiful afternoon.

Back up at El Chorro Park once again, it was time to load everything back up and head on out for our next adventure - riding quads at Pismo Beach.

We arrived home this morning, 10/10, and are beginning the long (and boring) process of unloading the 5th wheel, unpacking and putting things away - and talking about how to make NEXT OctobAIREfest the best yet.

More photos will be posted on the OctobAIREfest III page as soon as I have an opportunity to go through the ones I took and the ones I am receiving.

A very big and huge THANK YOU for all of you who attended - for your love of the breed, your camaraderie, and your generosity.
