Welcome The Airedale Terrier, TFAOTP*, is the largest of all the Terrier breeds, and known as the "King of the Terriers" for good reason. The breed was developed by poor farmers along the Aire River in Bingley, England about 200 years ago. These were men who could not afford a herding dog, a guard dog, a dog for the hunt, and a companion dog for the hearth - so the Airedale was created to be all those things. Today it is widely held that an Airedale can be trained to do what any other breed was developed to do. For example, you can't take an Australian Shepherd and expect to track bear or mountain lions - but an Airedale can do it! You would not get a Great Dane to rid your castle of mice - but you could have an Airedale do that for you and guard the castle at the same time! You wouldn't expect a Labrador or a Golden Retriever to herd sheep, but you could train an Airedale Terrier to do just that and have him retrieve water fowl along the way as well! As Teddy Roosevelt said, "The Airedale can do anything any other dog can do, and then lick the other dog if he has to!" About Us

Blackheath has been exhibiting and raising Airedale Terrier puppies since 1974. We started in Southern California, and then moved to the central California coast in 1984. There our dogs frolicked over a beautiful pastoral landscape until a move to Las Vegas in 2006. Now - they're all Desert Dogs!Nowadays, most of our holidays and outings are into the deep desert to camp - and the dogs all come with. They climb rocks like billy goats, they chase rabbits and lizards, they dig holes, explore old mines, and they swim in the Colorado River like fish - and love every minute of their time outdoors.But in the beginning..My first Airedale, Starmist Copper Cosmo, was purchased as a pet. With help and encouragement from my Aunt Cynthia, and cousins Pam and Toni, who had been breeding and showing CynPam's Miniature Poodles for years, it was not long, however, before I began following the show circuits with "Misty". In the beginning I didn't have the courage to go into the ring myself, and Pam did the handling. Monty Pearson (the stripping knife guy) taught me how to groom. When he saw how sincere I was about learning, he offered me a beautiful little bitch from a litter that he had just whelped. This little girl became Starmist Wil'o Wisp (aka Twiggy), the Blackheath foundation bitch. Twiggy did NOT like the show ring. When I finally got the courage to take a dog in the ring myself, she did everything a dog could do that would embarass and frustrate a handler. She would carry her ears back like a Whippet, let her tongue hang out of the side of her mouth - on the judge's side of course! - carry her tail straight out behind her like a sporting dog, sit when she was offered treats (even though she never did this at home). We called her our "backyard champion" because we were the only ones who got to see how lovely she was when she used herself the way an Airedale should. After many disappointing ring appearances, I decided that she should be bred with hopes she would prove herself in the whelping box.Twiggy was bred to Ch. Ernie's Jack Flash who was not only the #1 Airedale in the country at the time, but the #1 Terrier Dog. That litter, my first, produced my first International Champion: Am. Mex. Can. Intl. Ch. Blackheath's Dragonslayer. "Basil" as he was known to us, was my closest companion for 17 years. Basil's litter sister, "Sybil", started her show career in 1984. Known to the show world as Am. Mex. Intl. Ch. Blackheath's Isadora , she became my first top-ranked Airedale. She was the #1 Airedale Terrier bitch in the United States in 1985, #3 Airedale bitch in 1986, and tied for #2 top producing Airedale dam in 1989. What excitement she generated for me. Sybil was also a constant companion to myself and my son for nearly 15 years.Sybil was bred three times, but it was her third and final litter that gave me the best results. That litter produced five pups, Sonny, Delilah, Flame, Ruby and Burgie. Sonny, Delilah, and Flame all attained their championships with style - Sonny at the International Chicago Specialty, Delilah with a Specialty Best of Opposite Sex win (to her brother, Sonny, who went Best of Breed!) at the Northern California Terrier Association, and Flame with a Best of Breed win over a Best in Show Specials dog, at the Ventura Dog Fancier's Kennel Club. Ruby was shown as a puppy but was never taken into the ring as an adult. However, she was bred to an outstanding sire, Ch. Blackjack's Double Down Danny, and she did produce a wonderful daughter (Ch. Blackheath's Double Dare) who went on herself to become a champion and an excellent producer. Although Burgie had the makings of a great show dog, he became a family pet, and unfortunately never made it to the show ring.All the Airedale Terrier puppies that arrive here now are all in some way distantly related to these early dogs of mine. With each new litter, my love for the breed renews itself, along with the commitment to keep the breed strong and healthy.Our Airedale Terrier puppies are home-raised (under our feet!), and socialized with children, other dogs, vacuum cleaners, doors slamming, heavy metal, hip-hop and rap music booming - mixed of course with some classical, some jazz, and lots of country, visitors coming and going...in other words - in an environment that will produce sound temperament. We have only one litter per year. The effort to properly socialize the little pups is so time consuming, that once a year is more than enough! Click on photo to watch YouTube video of pups in action!Armed with ideas and information from clicker trainer, Corally Burmaster, who instituted the idea of the Puppy Head Start Program, and from fellow AKC Canine Ambassador, Joyce Miller, who gave me the heads up! on this fun and useful program, I have built a puppy playground that has become an integral part of my puppy socialization program.Pups in photo on the right are visiting the puppy playground for the first time. 6-month-old "Special" (upper right) is supervising.The pups absolutely love getting in the play yard and exploring. They climb through tubes, use cat walks, go down slides, play on a teeter board, learn to climb stairs - all activities that help to build coordination, confidence, and healthy minds. They are exposed to different surfaces - smooth, rough, cement, wood, plastic, metal. They are exposed to different heights with the cat walk heights varied on a regular basis. The skills they learn give them confidence in their bodies and their ability to cope with new surroundings. They also learn problem solving, as the equipment is changed around daily in order to keep the puppies challenged, or to introduce items that are more age appropriate. Their stimulation is ongoing.True Story: After the first Puppy Preschool had been completed, I allowed all the pups to enter. The photo on the right is the very first visit of the our first litter to experience this. At first, they were all "wowed" and followed each other around, stuck to each other, as they sniffed, climbed, investigated. However, within about 5 minutes, they were all swingin' from the chandeliers, bouncing, jumping, climbing, sliding - the works!The next morning, I let all the pups outside on my patio to eat their breakfast. Without exception, they flew past their food and into the Preschool Playground to romp! Later in the afternoon, while they were down for naps, I went into the Playground to clean up, and rearrange equipment - this is done about every 30-45 minutes throughout the day when they are in the playground to keep stimulation high. I had closed the gate into the playground while I worked. As the pups woke from their naps, they wandered out on the patio and lined up in front of the gate that led into the playground like kids waiting for the amusement park to open! It was a riot! Since then, every pup in every litter has had the same response. They LOVE it!Enjoy the video!

OctobAIREfest I Weekend started out as a lark. A suggestion was made on an email list that an Airedale Beach Party might be fun, and I took up the torch. In just a few weeks, by the volumes of inquires that I received, I realized that this could be a significant event - that could be held annually. Realizing that since many folks who had committed to attending would be traveling a great distance, OctobAIREfest would have to be more than just an Airedale Beach Party - perhaps the Beach Party, a BBQ, a Silent Auction for Rescue, and some other event that would involve both people and dogs. OctobAIREfest II October 21-23, 2005 Morro Bay, CA

OctobAIREfest II began planning early in 2005. However, by the time October rolled around, Hurricane Katrina had devistated the Gulf Coast. Instead of holding our auction for Airedale Rescue, I decided that we would contribute to the animal victims of Hurricane Katrina, and the Airedale World came through in style.From all over the world, Airedalers donated items for a marathon 8-week online auction. The auction was held in "waves" lasting one week each. The final items were offered at the actual OctobAIREfest II gathering and were placed in silent auction to be bid on by those actually attending the festivities.All the funds collected from this gigantic effort were donated to Noah's Wish, a volunteer organization that helps animals in times of disaster.In addition to the silent auction, Woods Animal Shelter in San Luis was holding its annual Doggy Walk-a-Thon and all the Airedales that had already arrived for our festivities joined in.We had a visit to the beach which was well attended, in spite of the cool, foggy weather, and then we were all off to the El Chorro Regional Park Off Lead Area to hold our event!Thanks to everyone who attended:CaliforniaKim Connelly. OctobAIREfest IV

OctobAIREfest IV October 10-12, 2008 Morro Bay, CA

As in the past, this OctobAIREfest ROCKED! The turn out was incredible! It was attended by 54 Airedale Terriers and nearly twice that number of humans! Click on photos for enlargement.I am embarassed to say that this year we were so heavily attended that I couldn't keep track of all the folks and all the dogs!The BBQ was the best thanks to cooks Dean Peeples and Bob Wagoner and all those who helped. Thanks to all those who attended we were able to donate another nice check to National Airedale Rescue. See you next year!! The only thing that marred this gathering was that Dean had broken his leg and at the last minute, we didn't know if we were going to be able to come. Because he is an Airedale person, he just did it. He hobbled around on his crutches and in a wheelchair for the weekend and helped with everything anyway. That's my guy!GRAND PRIZE WINNERS! Due to a mix-up in ticket drawing, there were TWO Grand Prize Winners! Tina Muna, Paso Robles, CA Pam Bilovesky, Pleasanton, CA These winners will each have a 16" x 20" custom oil portrait created from a photo of their favorite pet. Tina has already sent me a photo of "Ali", a gorgeous Standard Poodle. Pam wants a double portrait of her boy "Teddy", and his new little sister (who is currently in the "oven" - expected to "land" just before Christmas Day). Valentine Kitchen Witch

There is some debate over the exact country in which the "Kitchen Witch" originated, some claiming Germany and others Norway, but consensus points to it stemming from older European customs. The witch is supposed to depict a "good" witch who inspires productivity and safety in a kitchen, but also counteracts any ill-will directed to the home. It is considered good luck to give a kitchen witch to a friend or family member. It is said that "She has the power to keep roasts from burning, pots from boiling over, and sauces from spilling." Approximately 6.5" in length - This little Wire Foxie Valentine Kitchen Witch is sitting on a straw broom. She's wearing a stylish heart ribbon hat decorated with shiny hearts. It sits jauntily on her head, one ear poking through - to make sure it doesn't fall off while she's flying about. She's wearing a faux pearl necklace decorated with a miniature wooden heart. Straw broom is decorated with ribbon and hearts. Twistie is handmade - created using chenille soft stems. Her eyes and nose are genuine Swarovski crystals. The Artist

I have been painting animals all my life. My father, George Stevens, whose engineering career in aerospace began as a Disney animator, coached and guided my interest in artistic endeavors. The majority of my paintings are painted for personal pleasure and are not available to the general public. In 1987, after being diagnosed with terminal breast cancer, I was fortunate to not have to worry about anything but getting well. I took that opportunity to slow down, reassess my life, and spend more quality time with my young son, Taylor, who was only 11 months old at the time of my diagmosis. During this period, I spent time doing lots of painting. Some of the works created during this period are on display on this web site from time-to-time.I am positive that the spiritual connection I felt during this time with my son, time spent painting and creating, and the time spent therapeutically with my dogs, horses, and other animals on our ranch, made it possible for me to ignore the bleak prognosis given to me by my physicians, to beat the odds and be here today to share my art work, love for animals, and my survivor success story.Airedale Terriers have certainly always been my favorite subjects, and the majority of my work involves the dogs I live with. But, as you visit the various "Galleries" shown on this site as they open to the public, you will see I also enjoys studying and painting other animals. Enjoy the animal art on these pages!
